hi. both kids are sleeping, and i’m hiding in the sunroom and typing as quietly as i can.
that thing they say about no two babies being the same is so true. i can’t believe how much different motherhood has been this time around. (even just in the pregnancy and delivery.)
one of the biggest struggles i had with teddy when he was a new baby was sleeping through the night. i thought it was normal for a baby to get up 5 or 6 times, and would get green with envy anytime friends would complain to me about their infant who got up 4 or fewer times. sleeping through the night? i honestly thought that was impossible for a baby less than a year.
we tried a few different swaddle styles with teddy, and most frequently used a square piece of fabric folded into a triangle, wrapped around his body with his arms folded in. that seemed to be the most common method amongst my friends, and i didn’t feel the need to look much further. i tested a few other swaddles, but didn’t like them (and teddy hated them), so i just accepted it: my baby was not great at sleeping through the night. i told myself he was cute enough that it made up for it.
two years later, i was introduced to THE OLLIE WORLD SWADDLE while i was expecting vivienne. even though i knew it had excellent reviews, i prepared myself for the same sleepless nights and over-exhaustion i experienced with teddy, because that’s all i’d known before, and i couldn’t imagine a different scenario.
vivienne was about 2 weeks old the first time i put the ollie on her, and that evening she slept the first **SEVEN HOUR** stretch of her tiny little life. gid and i were speechless, and i have to admit, i thought it must be a coincidence, because who does that?! angel baby much?!
i’m still dumbfounded, even as i type.
the restful nights continued. a 6 hour stretch here, 7 hours there, 9 hours there. one night she slept an unbelievable 12 hours in a row! (and woke up completely ravenous. yikes.)
it occurred to me that perhaps vivienne was simply a better sleeper than teddy, and one evening when the ollie swaddle was in the washer, i decided to test my theory and wrapped her the same way i did with teddy. she refused to sleep. she’d close her eyes for a few minutes, (the same way teddy would) and just as i’d start to put her in her bassinet, the tiny cries would come, and the rocking would start back up. she was up 5 times that night. the following evening, i went back to the ollie and she only woke up once for a feed.
this changed our lives.
i am so much better a mother when i’ve had a reasonable amount of sleep, and this swaddle gave it to me. i use it for every nap, and every bedtime, and it’s served us so well during vivienne’s short time with us. sometimes i even downplay how easy the sleeping situation has been for us when i talk to people because i don’t want to sound braggy or jinx myself. haha.
i want to point out that there are many “swaddle blankets” that we love having in our home. you know the ones i’m talking about–they’re made of a thin material, usually have a pattern on them, and they’re lovely to drape over the car seat, lay on at the park or to snuggle under. the ollie is in a completely different category than those blankets when it comes to actually swaddling your baby for the purpose of sleep.
one of the biggest differences between the swaddles i’ve observed on the market and the ollie swaddle is that it’s made of a moisture-wicking fabric that normalizes your baby’s temperature, keeping them from getting overheated or too cold. it’s fabric also has a gentle stretch to it, which keeps your baby snug, but not uncomfortably so. (i tried one swaddle with teddy that was seriously a straight jacket and i couldn’t bear to see him in it.)
the ollie is also made with a delicate (yet incredibly strong) velcro, that is nearly impossible to escape from. i wondered if the velcro would bother me, but it hasn’t at all. in fact, it allows me to be able to access the diaper area without undoing the swaddle, which is crazy convenient– i changed vivi’s diaper while she was swaddled and still asleep once, and felt like i had earned some sort of olympic medal when i finished. vivienne has never managed to get out of her ollie swaddle, and guys- she’s a strong fighter. i would pick the ollie swaddle over any other on the market every time. it was the first thing i packed when we recently went out of town.
over the past year or so, i had the pleasure of getting to know Hindi, the creator and CEO of Ollie World, and she kindly agreed to sponsor a giveaway for her amazing product on this blog. i’m genuinely so excited for whoever wins because you guys- it’s made such a wonderful difference in my life.
